Stocking the Pond (1st time)
We have dug a fishing pond and let it sit for about 8 months before stocking it with fish to ensure it would hold water. We learned that it’s not a good idea to stock your pond unless temperatures are sure to stay cool while the fish establish themselves. We had an unexpected spike in temperatures shortly after the fish company arrived and lost quite a few. The good news is that we purchased our fish from a reputable company who gave us a credit to use once the weather cools back off in the spring. At that time, they will come and restock our losses. It is of note that we may not have had such a great experience if they hadn’t advised us to make daily loss counts and take some pictures to share with our vendor. This is just one more example of finding that networking and word of mouth recommendations are just as important in farming as it was in Cyber. Not to go on a tangent but this, you will find, is a reoccurring theme.
Attached is a picture of the pond when it was first dug. You can see a dam on the left and if you zoom in, you will see some of the fish habitats built from rocks found during the dig.
